Derek and I made a delicious pasta dinner together last night. It was angel hair with tomato basil sauce and ground turkey and homemade garlic bread on the side. It was followed up with some Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream!

I laid out all of my necessary race gear before I went to bed. I like to change and get ready in the living room so I don’t disturb Derek at like 6 in the morning and also so I don’t have to get ready in the dark.

I had my usual breakfast, although slightly different because it was made with a Bagel Thin instead of an actual bagel. I ate it super fast though because I was running out of time before I had to leave. I ended up waiting for the subway for at least 15 minutes and then I was finally on my way to the park. It was cold this morning, it was technically warmer than last week, but I felt colder. I ended up overdressing and was pretty warm by the middle of the race.

My goal for this race was 2 hours, but while I was actually running I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I wanted to PR and how it was feeling like a possibility. Miles 1 – 5 flew by! I couldn’t believe I was already more than 1/3 through the race. The first loop wasn’t so bad, I had no trouble conquering the hills, but the second time around was a different story.

I was trying very hard to stay as focused as I was last week, but it was getting hard because I couldn’t stop looking at my Garmin. I also had an awesome playlist this time around and it helped a ton! I don’t think I can ever run without music again! Miles 6-10 flew by just as quickly as the first 5.

My goal going into this race was to not feel like I was dying by mile 10….but I didn’t really do too well with that. Mile 10 was Harlem Hill the second time around and it hurt. A lot. I felt like I was on mile 22 of my marathon! I was barely trudging along the last 3 miles, my body just had NO energy left.

I thought the last 3 miles of the race were tough because I started out too fast, but honestly, looking back at my splits, they don’t seem too fast at all. I did have an amazing race last weekend, so there are no complaints here. It was a tough race that’s for sure, Central Park is no joke and having to run around it twice can be pretty brutal. I had to do it 3 times in this race!

I didn’t exactly make my goal of 2 hours, but I know I pushed and gave it my all. I wasn’t going in this to PR anyway, I just wanted to have a good race and I did, so I count it as another successful race. Remember my friend Adriana up there? She PR’ed and finished in 1:46!!!! She’s amazing. I hope I can run that fast one day 😀

I’m pretty sore, it took me a long time to walk to the subway after the race. I’ve been hungry all day and I can’t stop eating! I have been CRAVING a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting and I am on a mission to get one tomorrow from Crumbs Bake Shop, I cannot wait!!!

 

 

8 weeks till the Brooklyn Half! That’s the race I am aiming to PR for…time to really start training!

  2. Totally agree that the past looks pretty tasty. I found that I kept looking at my Garmin as well during a recent race and eventually took it off because it was so distracting. Congrats. you did an assume job.
